Trailer for "The Witcher": http://www.gametrailers.com/video/cinem ... cher/40361
Below I'll give a mention of its sequel, which will bring in deeper aspects to rpg game play and decision making. There will be a trailer for that that gets into this epicness.
This game came out around 2007 and it got pretty good ratings, more so when the enhanced version of it came out adding more onto the game play. Well I happened to get the 2008 enhanced version, the only actual pc game I've bought and I wasnt disappointed. I enjoyed alot of the features in the game, one being the fact you actually have to think ahead when doing quests. First one I recall me actually having to do extra research on was a quest to kill ghouls in a crypt. Though of course beginning you only have one steel sword which is made for killing humans and you don't get the silver sword for killing monsters until chapter two. So after I got some info on ghouls it tells me to do some real damage I need a silver sword...yeah, well I don't have that, so I had to make an oil base to coat my steel sword to make it effective as silver and along side that make a potion to see into the crypt I was supposed to go to because it was dark.
Everyone that you talk to has a voice in this game, another thing I liked it about it. o_o You realize then that medieval kids back then had the most F'd up games you can imagine. ::Little Boy:: "Hey everyone, lets go play slittin throats!" Great game for kids to play. Lol. On another note I liked how some decisions you make can actually screw you over later in the game. Like you can make a decision in chapter 1 and you don't see the result of your actions until like chapter 3 of the game where your like, "Oh snap, I shouldn't have done that." One such quest I had to deal with helping this two-timing dealer protect his crates. He thought some monsters were bashing them up at night so I had to wait till night fall and kill these creatures. On this particular run some elves and dwarves he was selling arms to come for the goods he promised to them and didn't deliver. Well of course you can decide to either give it to them or kill them. This is where the arch comes with this choice. I went with letting them have the goods and upon going back to the same guy later, he asks me to deliver a package into the city to a certain person at the inn. Now you don't go to the inn until chapter 2, so on beating chapter one and finally getting there I go to the inn only to discover the guy I was supposed to deliver the package to got merced by the elves I let have the stolen weapons. x_x. There goes my money...not to mention the fact the delivery packaged turned out to be medieval version of crack cocaine. Lol.
But for the most part I think perhaps the thing that might make some people like or dislike the game is the combat within it. Me personally, I enjoyed it for the fact your main character used a martial arts type sword style. Well actually you get 3 styles, though you could say 6 because your steel sword has completely different moves for the 3 styles then the silver sword you use on monsters. The styles are strong, fast, and group. Now strong style you have to use on strong enemies because if you try to use the quick blade on them you just don't do enough damage cause their muscle, fast style you have to use on the fast creatures because if you use strong style your moving slower so they can block it easily, and group style...well if your surrounding your basically swinging kick ass style in circles with your blade. >:3. Now that all sounds good and all but the main problem would be how you do these actions. Each style has about 5 moves to each one and the way to complete them is simply clicking the attack button at the right time. Click it on the enemy to start it off and he does like a 2 blade move before you'll see him make a swinging motion afterwards. Now this motion you'll see a flame trail on the blade...well if your playing on easy you will so you know he's just doing a twirl with the blade not meant for attacking, thats when you click the button again to go into the next combo where he busts 3-4 more moves, which look badass in watching. Though for most, they would prefer button mashing to pulling these off. Me, I can play it like that just fine and enjoy it.
Magic I haven't really gotten to far into...aside from wind and fire. Wind you can use to jedi knock down walls or enemies. Now if you know an enemy down with wind you can move up to them and kill them if they don't get up to fast and wind can stun enemies which gives you an instant kill if your quick enough to get to them. Fire, my personal favorite, is what i use most on quests to which i don't feel like using my sword. The run around quests. With fire if you hold the mouse over an enemy in the distance and then let go he throws a homing fireball at them that explodes on contact. Now if you happen to miss the enemy and it hits the ground next to them, no problem. This fireball will remain on the ground for like a few seconds and then explode. If your surrounded by enemies you can just click the button and if you've leveled the skill up to max you can send out 360 degree angle burst of fire that kills most in one hot. Other enemies it takes two, more if their a boss of course.
Well thats as much I'm going to tell on The Witcher mostly because I have to go to work now. Lol, but if your interested I would say to check it out. Download it for free off torrent or whatever if you don't want to buy it. But I would definitely look forward to its sequel because its going to take decision making to a whole new level. I mean to the point where the story can change not just on the decisions you make but on who you have with you in key moments of the game. Like if you have a guy with you that tends to run his mouth, he could actually screw up a deal for you because whomever your bring, will change the course of the conversation because they will talk. No more just the main character speaking and everyone else stays silent, or the usual well you have to have just these chars with you the situation will go this way. Whomever you have with you will either bring a good change to a pinnacle moment or make things go worse. Check out the trailer below for "The Witcher 2"
